What n8n is
n8n is a tool that connects your software. An event kicks off the work: a form submitted, an email received, an invoice uploaded. Then the steps follow one another on their own.
You draw this path as a diagram, step by step. That’s what’s called a workflow. n8n connects to hundreds of tools, and it can hand a step to an AI: reading a document, pulling out the figures, writing a draft.
Why we work with n8n
- It can run on a server you choose. Your data stays where you decided it should.
- It bills per execution. At n8n, one complete run of a workflow counts as one execution, however many steps it has.
- It accepts code when a case is out of the ordinary.
- It can put an AI to work partway through, or run an agent that picks the next step on its own.
Examples of n8n automations
- A quote request comes in through your website. n8n creates the contact in your CRM, Pipedrive or HubSpot for example, sends the customer an email with the next steps, and alerts the right person on your team.
- Supplier invoices received by email. AI reads each PDF, pulls out the supplier, the amount and the due date, and prepares the entry in your accounting software, bexio for example. You approve before anything is paid.
- The info@ inbox, sorted every morning. Each email is filed and passed on to the right person, with a draft reply ready to review.
- New Google reviews. Each review lands in your inbox with a suggested reply. A negative review is flagged to you right away.
- The Monday report. The week’s sales, inquiries and ad spend, gathered in a single email.
- An n8n agent for your team. It answers internal questions from your procedures, and fetches information from your tools. It’s a longer project: see what an AI agent costs.

What changes the price
- The number of tools to connect. Two or three makes a simple automation. Beyond that, or with lots of special cases, the price moves closer to that of an automation with AI.
- A step that reads or writes. As soon as AI is involved, it needs its instructions, its checks and tests on your real documents. That’s the automation with AI.
- An agent that decides what happens next. Several steps, decisions along the way and several tools: that’s a workflow AI agent, CHF 4,000 to 6,000.
- Installing n8n on your own server. It’s quoted once we know what you need.
What n8n itself costs
n8n has its own price list, in euros. The prices below come from n8n’s official pricing page. Checked on November 1, 2026.
- Starter: €20 a month billed annually, hosted by n8n, for 2,500 executions a month.
- Pro: €50 a month billed annually, hosted by n8n, for 10,000 executions a month.
- Business: €667 a month billed annually, for 40,000 executions a month, on your own server.
- Enterprise: on request, hosted by n8n or on your server.
Billed monthly, the prices are different: check them on n8n’s page before you choose.
Can you use n8n for free?
Yes, if you install it yourself. The Community edition is free, according to n8n’s documentation (checked on November 1, 2026). It has almost everything. What it mostly lacks is what teams need: sharing workflows between colleagues, signing in with company accounts, test environments and version tracking.
Free doesn’t mean maintenance-free: you need a server, and someone to handle updates and backups.
n8n in Switzerland: hosted by n8n or by you
With the plans hosted by n8n, your data is stored in the European Union, on servers in Frankfurt, according to n8n’s pricing page.
If you want your data to stay in Switzerland, n8n can also run on a server hosted in Switzerland, in your name. Whether that works depends on your needs: the volume, the tools to connect, and who looks after the server.
Your data also passes through the AI when a step hands it a document. We choose the AI provider with you, based on what your data requires.
n8n agency, freelancer or consultant: how to choose
In Switzerland, three kinds of providers build n8n automations.
- The AI studio, often one to three people. It knows the technology well, works fast and has low entry prices. On the other hand, it publishes few real case studies, often anonymous or fictional, and rarely offers the website or the visibility that go with the work.
- The web or marketing agency that adds AI. It already knows your website and your marketing. But AI and AI visibility are sold separately, and AI is often new to it.
- The large agency or systems integrator. Heavy projects, hosting in Switzerland or on your servers, security, whole teams. But budgets run into the tens of thousands of francs, which isn’t made for a small business’s first step.
Swiss providers who publish their prices charge between CHF 490 and 25,000 for a first automation. The median entry price is CHF 1,700. Monthly care runs around CHF 200, and ranges from CHF 50 to 1,500 depending on the case. Published prices, surveyed in November 2026, almost always before VAT.
Whatever you choose, ask four questions before you sign. What exactly does the price include? Who owns n8n, the workflows and the accounts? Who gets alerted when an automation stops? And what do you get if you switch providers?

When another provider is a better fit
If your automations have to handle very large volumes around the clock, with a written uptime guarantee, or run at the heart of heavy enterprise software, a bigger team that specializes in that software is better placed. And if what you mostly want is to learn n8n and do it yourself, training will serve you better than a project.
