n8n, Make or Zapier: which tool should you choose?

In short

To get started, n8n costs €20 a month, Make $9 and Zapier $19.99, billed annually. The real difference lies elsewhere: Zapier and Make count every step, n8n counts each complete execution, and n8n can run on your own server. Built for you, an automation costs CHF 800 to 2,000, then CHF 200 a month for ongoing care.

Prices checked on November 1, 2026, in each vendor’s own currency. n8n’s page lists its prices in euros, but from Switzerland it shows them in dollars: USD 20, 50 and 800 billed annually, USD 24, 60 and 960 billed monthly. Zapier quotes its prices before tax, Microsoft before VAT. At Make, paying annually saves 15%.

Steps, credits or executions: how each one counts

This is where the prices part ways. Zapier counts tasks: every step of an automation uses some. Make counts credits: every module action uses some, usually one. n8n counts executions: an automation that runs from start to finish counts once, whether it has 3 steps or 30.

Take a 5-step automation that runs 1,000 times a month. At n8n, that’s 1,000 executions. At Make and Zapier, it’s several thousand credits or tasks. The longer your automations, the more that gap matters.

n8n or Make

Make draws each scenario as a diagram, module by module, and its free plan gives you 1,000 credits a month to try it out. It’s a good fit for automations with a few steps, at medium volume, built by someone who doesn’t write code.

n8n is aimed at people who are a bit more technical. In return, long automations cost the same there as short ones, it accepts JavaScript or Python code, and it handles AI agents. All its plans include unlimited users. And it can run on your own server, which matters when your data has to stay in-house.

Zapier or Make

Zapier is set up step by step, without a diagram, and lists more than 9,000 apps. Its free plan allows 100 tasks a month. After that, the Professional plan starts at USD 19.99 a month billed annually, and its price rises with the task tier you pick, according to Zapier’s pricing page.

Make shows the whole scenario at a glance and lists more than 3,500 apps. Its Core plan gives you 10,000 credits a month for USD 9 billed annually, according to Make’s pricing page. For a small automation that rarely runs, either one will do. For longer scenarios, compare the number of steps and runs before you choose.

n8n or Power Automate

Power Automate is Microsoft’s automation tool. The Premium plan costs CHF 12.10 per user per month billed annually, before VAT, and the Process plan CHF 121.50 per bot per month, for a process that runs on its own, according to Microsoft’s pricing page. It makes sense if your whole business lives in Microsoft 365, or if you need to automate clicks in old software installed on a PC.

n8n is paid per execution, not per user. It connects to Google just as well as to Microsoft, and it can call any tool that has an API, including Swiss invoicing or business management software.

Which automation tool to choose

  • Two or three common apps, a few hundred runs a month: Zapier or Make, on their free or entry plan.
  • Multi-step scenarios at medium volume: Make.
  • Long automations, AI agents, or data that has to stay on your server: n8n.
  • A business that runs entirely on Microsoft 365, with tasks done on a PC: Power Automate.

Whichever you pick, the account is in your name. If you change providers, your automations stay with you.

What an automation built for you costs

A simple automation connects two or three tools. It costs CHF 800, and that covers mapping the process with you, the build, testing and documentation.

When AI has to read emails, invoices or forms, pull out the information and prepare a reply, plan on CHF 2,000. After that, ongoing care costs CHF 200 a month: monitoring, alerts and small fixes. We build with n8n or Make, depending on your tools and your data.

Elsewhere in Switzerland, providers who publish their prices charge between CHF 490 and 25,000 for a first automation, with a median entry price of CHF 1,700. Monthly care runs around CHF 200. Published prices, surveyed in November 2026, almost always before VAT.

When another provider is a better fit

If your IT team already knows Power Automate, or if the automation has to run at the heart of an ERP with round-the-clock uptime guarantees, a team that specializes in that software is better placed. And if you like to tinker, Zapier and Make are easy to pick up on your own: start with their free plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zapier free?

Yes, to start with. The Free plan gives you 100 tasks a month, with two-step automations. As soon as you need more, you have to move up to the Professional plan.

Is n8n really free?

The Community edition is, if you install it on your own server. The server itself is paid for at the hosting provider, and someone has to keep it up to date. Hosted by n8n, the tool starts with the Starter plan.

Is Make the old Integromat?

Yes. Integromat took the name Make in 2022. The idea hasn’t changed: scenarios made of modules, in a visual editor.
